Gen. Tumukunde has asked voters in Bududa who do not want to vote for him to vote for any other presidential candidate but Museveni. This is a good sign that the opposition can actually work together if they choose to.
Gen. Tumukunde was one of the allies of President Museveni and in fact they went to the Bush together.
During one of Museveni’s campaigns, he said he can not make a mistake of leaving power to any of his former friends that is Gen. Tumukunde and Gen. Mugisha Muntu. So, this brings us down to the question of whether it is upto Museveni to decide who should be in power. Isn’t it in the hands of the Ugandans, the Voters to decide who they want to be in power?
These statements from two powerful people are very sensitive. Why would Tumukunde decampaign his former great friend? Why would Museveni say he can’t leave power to Tumukunde or Muntu? In any case we know that these are all campaigning strategies. If you can’t have the voters on your side probably decampaigning your opponent would let you pass.
It would have been really strategic if the opposition had made one block and sent in one candidate to represent them all. The battle would be easier that way because voters wouldn’t be so divided.
Probably they just couldn’t reach a consensus when it came to their different missions and vision regarding this country.
