A Guide to Buying the Right Bed Covers for Your Queen Size Bed

A traditional choice for beds in Australia is the queen size bed. A queen-size bed is technically meant for two people, but if you value your space, then you can sleep solo on a queen bed, with ample space to stretch out and roll over to your heart’s delight.

Here’s an interesting tidbit of information: did you know that you spend a third of your life in bed? Unfortunately, millions of Australians suffer from either lack of sleep or disturbed sleep.  That’s where having comfortable bedding comes in. Plush bedding on your mattress can make all the difference in the world in terms of high quality, deep sleep.

One of the comfiest and most popular types of bedding, queen size quilt cover sets can make your bedroom a luxurious sanctuary to rest and sink your body in after a long day at work. Depending on the weather, though, duvets, blankets, comforters or just basic, normal linen sheets may be another great choice. Here are some things to look for when you’re shopping for new sheets.

Thread Count – Higher Does Not (Always) Equals Better

First off, what is thread count? Thread count refers to the number of woven threads that make up one square inch of sheet fabric, combining horizontal and vertical threads. Ideally, there should be 400-600 threads per inch.

You’ve probably heard time and again that a high thread count in your sheets equals softer and better quality covers. While this may be true in some cases, when it comes to ordinary cotton, that statement rings false.

The thing is, as a sneaky marketing trick, extra threads are often twisted into the sheet, adding to the thread count without really doing anything to make the fabric softer and smoother.

Try to look instead for sheets made of combed Egyptian or Pima cotton. These cotton fibres are 50 per cent longer than those of standard cotton, which results in a sheet that is softer, stronger and more long-lasting than standard cotton sheets.

Now that you know how to spot good quality sheets, moving on to the different types of bed covers.

Blankets

The blanket is a single layer covering. Some types of materials used for blankets are wool, cotton, cashmere, fleece, and knitted polyester.

Quilts

A quilt is a three-layered bed covering. The top layer is a pieced fabric, in which different pieces of fabrics are sewn together in different patterns. The middle layer, called filling, is the fluffy, thick layer containing one of these materials: wool, down, cotton, or polyester that gives warmth. Finally, the bottom layer is similar to the top layer fabric.

They usually may be too warm for summer, but a good alternative during the warm weathered days are cotton quilts.

Duvets

A duvet is a type of bedding filled with natural or synthetic fibres – usually down, wool, or feathers. It consists of two separate pieces; an insert and a cover. They are thicker than comforters and more fluffy. They also offer a more simple, cleaner look compared to comforters.

Comforters

This type of bedding is typically filled with down feathers or synthetic fibres like polyester. A comforter consists of only one piece, unlike a duvet. Comforters are larger than duvets.

All of the above bed covers come in a variety of styles, patterns and designs, and you have a wide variety of options to choose from. Ultimately, though, queen size quilt cover sets are an unbeatable choice if you’re looking for good bedding set for your queen size bed.
