It should be noted that he has barely competed in 25 aps over the past three years. He had an injury laden spell last year. However, he managed to prove just why he’s the best when he took a 53 second lead in the final lap.
Cheptegei recorded a time of 27:51.42 and won gold as a result. It should be noted that he’s the world record holder in both the 5,000 and 10000m. Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo took second position and won silver while Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega took bronze after coming in third.
Taking to his social media pages, Cheptegei couldn’t hide his excitement.
“GOLD. I’m very excited and proud that I have succeeded in winning my third world title in a row. This was the best possible way to end the season. I’m so proud that I have an amazing team around me. With our work together we have made it possible to win for the third time. And for the fans, thank you so much for the support,” said Cheptegei via his Instagram page.
Cheptegei will now be competing in the 5000m alongside fellow Ugandan, Oscar Chelimo. This third consecutive win has placed the Ugandan alongside another elite runner, Great Britain’s Mo Farah. He won the triple in 2013 (Moscow), 2015 (Beijing), and 2017 (London).
The Ugandan and Briton are one title away from equaling the all time greats of the track field. These are Ethiopians Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele, who won the world title four times apiece.
