In a bid to address sky rocketing drugs and other substance abuse among the youth in community and schools, Hope and Beyond Non-Government Organization will construct a modern rehabilitation centre to provide treatment for these victims.
Dr. David Kalema the Executive Director says sh 3billion facility to be set up will have all possible services for treatment, diagnosis, accomodation, recreational services and training centre for professionals to advance treatment.
“Following an increase in number of addicts in the country, we are looking at constructing a modern rehabilitation centre that will help address addictions and substance abuse in society in our five year’s strategic plan (2018/2022),”Kalema said.
The NGO that has just celebrated 7 years of existence and extended services to over 1000 victims works with local and international universities to provide research forums for students/researchers interested in substance abuse, treatment and rehabilitation advocacy.
Kalema revealed the development while presenting a paper at the 5th East African Psychology conference on Friday at Nabinooya Beach Hotel. The theme for the conference was Promoting psychological principles to improve maternal health, addiction care and community resilience.
Kalema said Uganda is one of the Sub-Saharan countries with the highest rate of alcohol-related burden in the world, but supply and demand reduction strategies such as regulatory measures, prevention and treatment programs are hardly available.
Belgium-based consultant Johan De Bruycker facilitated the strategic planning for the coming 5 years. The newly set development agenda for 2018 to 2022 seeks to expand treatment and rehabilitation services in Kampala and in Uganda to better help mitigating the substance use disorder epidemic in the country.
Hope and beyond provides treatment, rehabilitation services for people with alcohol to live addiction free lifestyle. The centre does detoxification and psychosocial interventions.
The NGO has a well-designed clinical program to facilitate safe elimination of the harmful substance that alcohol and drugs leave in the body. The health Unit is licensed by the Allied Health Professional Council of the Ministry of Health (Uganda).
