Okay, here is the thing, I happen to be the human resource manager of a midsized company growing at lightning speed. This means dealing with different kinds of people on a daily. From job seekers, service providers to marketeers among others. This leaves me with no choice but to take on different roles to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Now, about a week ago, some ladies(I don’t know why it had to be only ladies) messaged me.
Both were looking for a job.
The first one sent this:
“Hi, are you hiring if you are let me know. Thank you.” (Punctuation problem is where I ended)
The second wrote:…
“Good morning sir/madam, my name is ….
I admire the good work you are doing with…
Please, I have a Business Administration diploma and…
I am currently jobless due to .…
I am looking for any open position in your company, I know a thing or two about customer care and wouldn’t mind a receptionist job. I am also quite conversant with …. and are open to learning new ideas to improve my skills set.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.”
Now, obviously I never gave any attention to the first message. You may also ask why but I’m sure you already know the answer.
However, the fact that people can’t see you doesn’t mean they can’t read (your message) between the lines.
Most of us send messages to people we admire online saying things such as, “hi, can you mentor me?”
Sorry brother/sister, you cannot be mentored that way.
Don’t send messages to people you don’t know saying “hi”. It is considered rude.
You’re in Africa, remember.
Instead, your message should go,…
“Good morning Sir/Madam,…
I admire the good work you’re doing with (mention specifics). I read your post on (mention particular topic) and I couldn’t help but reach out. I am a (mention your role) and I was thinking I could help in (mention a specific area you could offer them help)”.
This will get their attention.
Even if they already have someone for that position, your cultured disposition could earn you a spot in their minds for future opportunities.
Also, please let’s repent from the needless “His and Hellos” today.
There are so many opportunities you can get if you learn how to communicate well and effectively with people online, people you don’t know.
You’ve been jobless for years and you think you’re just unlucky, well, maybe you need to start communicating effectively with people.
Another disease which is quite common these days is {SHORTHAND} but let’s talk about this next time. For now, have a great day.
