Social media had become a battleground for these two nations, which are Africa’s biggest giants in different aspects.
It wasn’t far before the game which was the first semi-final of the tournament kicked off. A goalless first half saw all teams return for the second half with a lot to prove and win the tie.
There wasn’t any goal despite the plethora of attacks from either side. However, Nigeria got a penalty in the 67th minute after Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box. Nigerian captain William-Troost Ekong made no mistake from the spot as he tucked it away beautifully.
The Super Eagles thought they were walking away with the win as Osimhen doubled their lead in the 87th minute. However, after a VAR review, the goal was canceled and South Africa instead got a penalty.
Thebo Mokoena revived the Bafana Bafana’s hopes of a surprise appearance at the finals.
There was more drama as South Africa’s Kekana got a red card in extra time. However, the West Africans won the penalty shootout as their goalie, Stanley Nwabali saved two spot kicks. And Kelechi Iheanacho sent Nigeria through with the last kick of the game.
Different Nigerians celebrated wildly and have been sending social media into a frenzy.
Simi said “I don’t think I could stand if I wasn’t Nigerian.” Davido on the other hand asked his fellow compatriots to send him his bank account number details and he sent them money. Burna Boy was the other singer who congratulated the Super Eagles.
Nigeria will now take on the hosts Ivory Coast in the finals on Sunday 11th February. The Elephants knocked out DR Congo through a Sebastian Haller lone goal.
