During my radio address at Morulinga State Lodge in Napak District. President Museveni continued to stress the need for Karimojong to abandon their subsistence means of farming, and nomadism for commercialised farming and fruit growing so as to generate wealth.
Karamoja’s most stinging issue initially were guns. When Amin collapsed, our people here went and looted guns and started attacking other clans.
Amin’s army had 20,000 men when we were fighting them, but the guns we were fighting in Karamoja were two times the army of Amin.
I am happy we solved the issue of guns here, now our next agenda is to start battling the problem of water. We cannot do everything at once, it is also a problem to start touching too many things at once,’Museveni said.
If we build at least 20 dams here, one dam will be able to support at least 350 cows during draught. We can then introduce diary cows to make money,’he said.
We shall invite foreigners here to open up big factories to employ our people, while I urge that the locals invest in small businesses, even if it is able to employ 6 people, that will be the start. Imagine if at least 60 people can employ 6 people each,’he said.
Museveni said this place is also good for growing fruits. We can grow fruits and invest in juice processing plants. I will personally start a model farm here to show it is possible.
Lastly, let everyone of us find where we can best deploy to create wealth. I recommend four sectors; ICT, Commercial Agriculture, Services Sector (Boda bodas/ transport, salon, restaurants etc) and Factories,’he added.
The other sector is government jobs, but these are very few and we are too many.
