Thomas Tayebwa: Is Uganda Ready For What NRM Is Cooking?

Is Uganda Ready For What NRM Is Cooking?

NRM members have started meeting to discuss a bill relating to MPs electing the president. Apparently, they want to reserve this privilege to the elected MPs. The question is, is Uganda ready for this?

There is opposition against this already from several corners, especially the opposition. People don’t seem to understand how this even came up because for them it is so unbecoming.

Some opposition members, like Bobi Wine have already started calling out Ugandans to shun this injustice. He said this is how so many other bills started and then they became laws.

Bobi Wine says, it always starts as a rumour and before we know it, it’s a law and we can’t do anything about it. According to him, if anyone wants to do something, they should start now.

“The people of Uganda must not underestimate the new scheme- this is how all the past schemes started, including removing term limits and age limit from the Constitution. But as they say, “What will kill a man begins as an appetite.”

Yesterday as NRM met, Thomas Tayebwa, the NRM chief whip said they didn’t receive the proposal. However, they are fully aware of the benefits of such a system and are appreciative of its advantages.

“As NRM Caucus we are yet to receive this proposal. However, we must appreciate that the proposed system is one of the known political systems practiced by successful democracies like Great Britain, Italy, Canada etc. Once proposed, full consultations will be made with stakeholders,” he said.
