Four people lost their lives on the spot, and more than 20 others have sustained serious injuries. Two of them succumbed to their injuries immediately.
The RDC said the truck, originating from Abalata Market in Ongongoja Sub-county, with registration number plate UBC936M, collided with two individuals on a Boda Boda, registered as UEJ 5621E. This resulted in their immediate death.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the Canter experienced mechanical issues with the tyre. It was also dangerously overloaded with both luggage and passengers.
The injured victims have been swiftly evacuated to Katakwi District Hospital. Ten others requiring further medical attention have been transferred to Soroti Hospital.
Katamba also advised traders and drivers to refrain from overloading passengers. Strict measures will be implemented to address issues of overloading and traders transporting excessive luggage in Fuzo lorries or trucks during market days.
He further expressed regret over the incident and urged the public to remain calm. He assured them that all necessary medical assistance was being coordinated with Soroti Hospital promptly.
