KIU Vice Chancellor Asks Government To Support E-learning

Kampala International University (KIU Vice Chancellor Mouhamad  Mpezamihigo has asked government to fund private education institutions to beef up virtual and other online education to counteract covid-19 challenges.

He says although most education institutions have embraced Standard Operating Procedures, the world of education has changed requiring most institutions to adopt  e-learning in their teaching programmes.

“Although Kiu is leading private university offering cutting edge education, we still confronted with huge challenge of providing online education due yo heavy investment into the system. We pioneered virtual education learning before covid-19, however we still challenged by the number to scale up elearning education to vast majority of our students who still believe in physical attendance for their education,”Mouhamad said

He told the media  at the sideline  of Kampala  International University 23rd graduation ceremony on Saturday where over 1400 graduated with degrees and masters in different disciplines.

Asked why Kiu has remained in business despite covid disruptions, KIU vice chancellor attributed this to blended teaching, innovations and investment into information, Communication technology hence blended quality education that is relevant to the students population.

“Our strength has been innovation and research to address education dynamics. We invested heavily into virtual education before covid and yet to invest more 200,000 euros to boost our  online education platform,” he stressed.

On 18th March 2020, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni addressed the nation on the deadly COVID-19 pandemic and ordered the closure of schools and tertiary institutions for one month over threats of Coronavirus pandemic, thereby prompting KIU to provide her students with online learning material during this period.

Dr. Mbabazize Mbabazi, the Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, said that the lecturers were then forced to offer the necessary assistance to  students virtually.

“With the advancement of technology, there is no way one can avoid online learning because it’s a basic requirement for all universities. Our students have been actually doing this but on their own. However, this time around it’s a must and lecturers are actually ready to guide,” he said.

Kiu then introduced embraced students to access LMS via the university website from which they  accessed web-based content through hyperlinks specific to schools, faculties and colleges and this platform that students had to follow instructions given by the course-unit lecturers via the LMS or shared within the WhatsApp groups created by the coordinators.

Since inception Kampala International University has graduated over 40,000 graduates into the job market.
