Ssubi, 23, is currently admitted in Masaka Regional Referral hospital after sustaining burn wounds as he was trying to escape the burning house.
During an interview with journalists on Monday, Ssubi narrated that his landlord has on several occasions threatened to put his house ablaze if he doesn’t pay his rent arrears, an issue he reported to the LC1 chairman, Mr Nsamba John.
The landlord is demanding only one month which is May, I tried explaining to him that I haven’t been working due to the pandemic lockdown and also reminded him that president Museveni told all landlords to wait until the deadly virus is over, but he angrily said to me that his houses were not built by Museveni and his directives to landlords to stop demanding rent fees from their tenants does not apply on his house,’said Ssubi.
On that fateful day, I was sleeping inside my room, but I woke up immediately after seeing fire gutting the house,’he said.
I tried to force my way out, but in the process, fire burnt both of my hands and mouth,’he added.
Police has launched investigations into the matter.
