Local Government Minister and Igara West Member of Parliament Raphael Magyezi has vowed to close schools with out pit latrines and Standard Operating Procedures as Ministry of Education plans to reopen schools.
“Its pathetic to have schools open without proper standard operating procedures and pit latrines in place. I will issue government circular to District Education Officers to take action effective 1st March,”Magyezi said.
“Schools without pit latrines must be closed. Operating a school without pit latrines is more dangerous than covid,”he added
Local government minister said most private schools operate without adequate latrines and lack basic minimum operating standards to run as education institutions.
He was addressing civil society activists on education sector working group in Kampala.
President Museveni recently announced the re-opening dates for semi-candidates, universities and tertiary institutions.
According to the President, learners in Primary Six, S3 and S5 will resume classes on March 1, 2021, and will study in a staggered system where different groups of learners will be reporting to school on different days as decided by the ministry or school authorities.
He further argues that normal learning will possibly resume after a section of Ugandans have been vaccinated.
On the fate of learners in other classes like P.4-5 and those in S.1-2, the president says they will also return to school after candidates have finished sitting their examinations. He, however, advises that they will also learn based on a staggered system blended with long-distance education whose detailed planned will be worked out by the ministry of education.
On the same development, Education Service Commission Secretary Dr Asuman Lukwago also announced recruitment of 3,000 teachers for secondary schools.
