Maasai Man Who Married Italian Woman Says His wife Is Not Good Cook: “I Cook For Her”

Who says men can’t cook? Well, in the African culture, it is uncommon to see a man especially a Maasai man comfortably cooking for his family. If it happens, it doesn’t go without raising eyebrows from society or bruising his ego.

However, for Ntoiyai Koruta, cooking for his Italian wife Gaia Dominici and their little girl is one of his favourite things to do as a husband.

Dominici said her husband cooks because he literally detests her cooking. But wait a second, isn’t Dominici a descendant from the land of pasta? She definitely is, but whatever the Maasai man says, he has his own reasons.

“He says that I don’t know how to cook. And so, he prefers to cook by himself. Huwa anasema chakula changu sio tamu sana (he says my food is not delicious,” she said amidst laughter.

Nonetheless, Koruta does not make meals for his family with a heavy heart. He wears a broad smile because since his days as a bachelor, he learnt to cook for himself.

“In my life, I have not grown around so much and so I had to depend on myself most of the time,” he said.

How the two met!

The couple who have been married for over three years defied all odds and limits to be the happy family that they are today. They first met in 2014 when Dominici, a photojournalist by then, went to Maasai land to take pictures. Her now-husband was in the company of another Maasai warrior when they saw her taking the photos of a woman without her knowledge.

Though the warrior was mad about her photographs, Koruta was gentle with her and even asked his counterparts to protect Dominici like they do their women.

“He was really tall and it was hard not to notice him but what really caught my attention was his attitude because he was helping me through this situation,” she said.

They had communication barriers in the first days of their meeting as she was yet to learn Kiswahili. She felt more connected to him and knew he would be her soulmate.

She got married to him and her Italian parents flew all the way to Kenya to witness her marriage to the man of her dreams at Sheria House.

Now, years later, they cannot be more in love. However, they have had to contend with judgmental people and scathing stereotypes. Fortunately, none of that threatens their solid marriage.

“If you are not careful, people’s opinions could cause harm to a marriage. If you get into the habit of listening to everyone, your marriage will suffer,” the hubby said.
