Man Kills Juvenile, Critically Injures Others In Fort Portal

The police in Fort Portal is holding a 36-year-old man in relation to the death of a juvenile and injuring of two other people.

The Rwenzori West Police spokesperson, Vincent Twesige identified the deceased as Angel Faustine, a toddler aged 2 years and 10 months. She was a daughter to Kasami Francis a mason resident of Kidukuru A cell, Karambi ward, Northern Division in Fort Portal City.

Twesige said the two other victims are Elijah Nsereko aged 1 year and two months, and Irene Namara, aged 10 years. The two juveniles were children to Deborah Nagawa and Rose Kabasiita respectively, who are all residents of the above address.

The police spokesperson further identified the suspect as 36-year-old David Kachope, a peasant resident of the same area. According to the police, a 37-year-old Emmanuel Kasaija, who lives in the same area reported the case.

It is alleged that on 27 December 2021, at around 9:00 am, Nagawa Deborah, mother to one of the victims had been showering. At that same time, she saw Kachope cutting Namara Irene, before coming down to her own child Nsereko Elijah.

The sight of this made her immediately cover herself with a towel. She came out to save the children who had been playing in the compound. Unfortunately, by the time she reached them, the suspect had already cut Namara on the head and both arms.

But as he continued to cut Elijah in the neck. Residents then came to the rescue after hearing the children screaming. They then disarmed the suspect of the panga he had.

After disarming him, the suspect picked an axe and ran with it behind the house where he found another victim (deceased).

He hit her in the head with the axe and started to make his unsuccessful getaway. The gathered residents chased and caught him.

The residents then took the injured Elijah to Maranatha Children’s clinic where they admitted him and the other victims to Virika Hospital. Shortly after their admission, Faustine, unfortunately, died from her injury.

Postmortem performed on the deceased’s body revealed that she died of hemorrhagic shock.

I was informed that I needed to have a business with a capital of Shs4m yet my capital was very small.” The chairperson Kisoboka Saving Group in Nawandala Ms. Nakagolo Faith said they were not able to join the program. This is given the many conditions attached. She also asked their woman MP to raise their concerns to the relevant offices. The MP condemned the mode of implementation of the program. She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs. This is especially those who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs.
