Man Who Fell Into 60ft Borehole, Rescued Alive After 13 Days

A mentally disturbed man identified as Mugambi Royford,42, has shocked residents of Gatituni village in Tharaka-Nithi County Kenya after he was rescued alive from a 60ft borehole.

Mugambi who survived in a 60ft borehole for 13 consecutive days without food was retrieved on Wednesday evening.

His disappearance occurred during morning hours on 22nd May 2020, whilst with his elderly mom who stays with him.

During an interview with reporters at their rural home on Thursday morning, the victim’s elder brother identified as Mr Gitonga Henry narrated that they began hunting for him since he disappeared; they even went to Chuka County Referral Hospital mortuary hoping to find at least his dead body.

The family went ahead and reported his disappearance at Chuka police station, but they almost lost hope after many days of tracing him, only to discover him in a borehole,’he said.

According to Mr Gitonga, one of the neighbours Mr Mwenda John, who was busy doing his work near the borehole, heard somebody calling and thought it was his dad who was also busy doing his work a few meters away. He responded to his dad who said he didn’t call him.

Mr John continued working and then heard the voice once again. This time around the person called directly his real name, in trying to trace the direction of the voice which he said was familiar, it was coming directly from the borehole.

Going close to the borehole while calling out, Mugambi responded and request him for some drinking water.

Mr Mwenda ran very fast with a lot of excitement and informed the victim’s family. They immediately looked for a ladder and a rope and rescued him.

The family was advised by a doctor to give him glucose and some milk for some days before giving him porridge and later soft food.
