According to the survey conducted by the Uganda Human Rights Commission, since March, eleven suspected thieves have so far been killed and their remains burnt to ashes.
What makes it more shocking, most killings of these suspects by mob action happened a couple of days ago and that was during Easter season.
The action of killing and burning the remains of suspected thieves first happened in June 2018 when the mob raided Lira Hospital mortuary and forcefully removed the body of a well-known robber identified as Odongo Solomon, poured petrol and burnt it to ashes.
Solomon, who was a suspected unfavorably known thieve in Lango, had escaped from prison. Similarly, on a different occasion around 17th April, angry mob attacked a local business person called Onguu Okello in Kole District and tormented him until he died.
Later on, the suspect’s body was burnt fiercely. Okello was accused of robbing a cow belonging to one of the locals.
After one day, another man identified as Owiny Jimmy was beaten to death and his body was set on fire.
Uganda Human Rights Commission managed to compile a few cases regarding the issue.
