MUBS Lecturers Strike Over Salary Payment A Week To Reopening The University

Makerere University Business School (MUBS) lecturers have declared a sit down strike over their salaries that are pending. The strike comes a week towards the reopening of the university meaning that the lecturers will not do their jobs if salaries are not paid.

The MUBS lecturers declared the strike during a press conference held on Sunday. During the conference, they called upon students to not report to the institution expected to open on 15 October.

President Museveni in a recent national address authorized schools and institutions to open for final students to go and complete their year.

Brian Muyomba, the chairperson of the MUBS Academic Staff Association declared the sit-down strike. He explained that for the last 10 years, MUBS staff members have negotiated for a fair pay in vain.

‘’We have been engaging management. They keep telling us that they are trying to lobby but for 10 years there has to come a time of making hard decisions,’’ Muyomba said.

According to Muyomba, senior staff and management of MUBS held a meeting with president Museveni on December 28, 2019. The main issue of the meeting was to harmonize salaries of staff members in the institution. He said president Museveni promised that by July 2020, the matter would be resolved.

After the meeting, payment of shs.59 billion was directed by Public Service Permanent Secretary Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire. She said this money had to cater for salaries of the 843 MUBS staff members.

At least 8000 finalists who were preparing to return to MUBS will be affected by this strike.
