This comes after Anita Among, the speaker of parliament directed last evening that the festival should be canceled. The thought came after MPs said that the festival is a promotion of sexual immorality.
The Nyege Nyege Festival is a popular music concert that happens every year in the city of Jinja. It is scheduled to take place in 9 days and will run for four days.
Brandon Kintu, the Kagoma North MP and businessman in Jinja recently spoke to the media. He revealed how he has attended the festival many times and confirmed that it has strict rules and regulations. He also refuted claims that the festival is a breeding ground for sexual immorality.
Kintu said they cannot sit by and let the business community lose out on the millions of shillings that can be generated from over 8000 expected tourists.
“I have been attending this festival myself even before I became a member of parliament. I’m a business person and I also exhibit some products there. Such a thing has never happened. The events called Nyege Nyege are the most popular to these other world events, festivals, carnivals that happen elsewhere in the world,” Kintu said
He said as one of the area members, he is giving them hope telling them to continue with preparations.
“We are still going to hold conversations to make sure we don’t pull out of such a big item in this country because Jinja as a town is a tourism site.” he added.
He said the only requirement is to follow the rules and regulations put in place to ensure a successful event.
Martin Magera, the state Minister for Tourism has also defended the event, describing it as a home for tourism. Apparently, over 8000 tourists had already booked tickets for the event according to Magera.
