The National Unity Platform overshadowed FDC as the majority Opposition party after the 2021 General elections. The Kamwokya-based party had a slogan of “We are removing a dictator.” However, up to now ‘the dictator’ has proved too strong for the amateur party and its affiliates.
This has seen some people label the party a sell out and a hoodwink. Ofwono Opondo said that in one year, NUP has failed prompting Besigye to try and reclaim his spot.
On Besigye’s protests against the skyrocketing commodity prices, Ofwono Opondo said that Besigye should know better. Some things are beyond government control and shouting won’t change anything.
“I suspect that Besigye’s main drive is that in one year, NUP has not realized the political momentum to push out the ‘junta’ like he calls us.
Some things are beyond our control. I expect Besigye to know that shouting won’t change much,” he said while appearing on the NBS Frontline program.
Another panelist on the show, DP president, Nobert Mao said that what Besigye is doing is a significant protest. However, his approach has severe repercussions.
“What Col. Besigye is doing is not only a struggle against the economic situation or ‘power grab’, but the most significant protest against apathy. This approach of Col. Besigye, however, has severe limitations,” said Chairman Mao.
Furthermore, Mao said that no one is trying to demean Besigye’s protests. And in fact everyone in the Opposition is trying to do what they think is the best move. This is because each of them has a way they want history to remember them.
“No one is demeaning the efforts and courage of Dr. Kizza Besigye. The truth of the matter is all of us in politics want to be perceived and remembered in a particular way.
I believe that Dr. Kizza Besigye is curving his space in history. We all do, and it doesn’t end with him.”
Mao said that as a country, there is need to organize themselves. However for now, all they can do is invest time and address the challenges of the Opposition especially the core issues.
Mao further supported the protests against the skyrocketing prices of commodities. He said that government should cut the taxes on fuel. He also branded President Museveni an incompetent fighter against corruption.
