Police Arrests Suspected Jinja City Rapist And Serial Pedophile After Manhunt

A joint security operation has led to the arrest of a 40-year-old suspected criminal who has been wanted for a spate of crimes in Jinja City. These include rape, defilement and murder offences.

The Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Abbey Ngako, confirmed the arrest of the suspect. The suspect was also picked with two female accomplices who are currently detained at Jinja police station. They will be arraigned in Court.

The police picked the suspects  in Namutumba. He goes by several aliases including Robert Wanyama and Peter Wafula Jackson, together with Brenda Mbwali, 23, and Jubeta Nabirye, 30.

According to Mr Ngako, the suspect is one of the most sought-after criminals in Jinja City. Authorities also wanted him for impersonating a highly ranked UPDF army officer.

“We have registered over 12 cases of rape and defilement against the suspect; his arrest followed a joint security operation and tracking of the phone he was using for committing the crimes,” Mr Ngako explained.

Mr Ngako added that the suspect took his targets to Kakira Sugarcane plantations after performing criminal acts on them. These are usually underage girls, he would abuse and warn them never to report or else he would pursue and kill them.

Rising cases of defilement

This operation comes as the country registered more than 20,000 cases of child abuse. This is only during the months the country has been under COVID-19 lockdown.

Since COVID-19 lockdown in March and the subsequent closure of schools, there has been a growing pattern of abuse and domestic violence targeting children at home.

There are a number of reports showing an increase in child marriage. These cases involve underage girls sold off into marriage in exchange for money and other commodities.
