Politics Of Color Have No Place In Institutes Of Learning – Hon Yusuf Nsibambi

The Mawokota south member of Parliament, Hon. Yusuf Nsibambi, has come out to task authorities to make sure that they stamp out politics of color from universities.

This follows the tragic murder of a UCU law student, Betungura Bewatte, at Makerere University during the 88th guild campaigns.

A number of people have come out to condemn this unfortunate action. And many are questioning why they allow political parties in institutions of learning. These politics have even engulfed primary learning kids.

Yusuf Nsibambi added that what these students need is leadership not politics. And no party policy addresses students policy at universities.

Furthermore, the FDC member said that these students learn from their leaders. Therefore, students learnt the election violence at Makerere University from the countrywide politicians.

“We should remove the politics of color from University. They don’t need parties; they need leadership. No party policy addresses students’ needs at university. Young people learn from older people. The election violence at Makerere has been learnt from the political events these young people have seen in the country,” said the legislator.

However, separating party politics from these universities could be a very difficult task. This has been the norm since time immemorial.

Historically, learning institutions especially universities have sparked revolutions and leadership change globally.

These parties also use these elections as a battleground to prove their might. Makerere University itself in a circular revealed that they don’t allow partisan politics at the campus.

Surprisingly they have done less to avert the unfoldings over the years. It is only at Uganda Christian University Mukono where they prohibit partisan politics.

Meanwhile, they buried Betungura yesterday in great sorrow in his home district of Kamwenge.
