Minister Rukutana Acquitted Of All Charges After Ntungamo Shootings

The State Minister for Labour, Mwesigwa Rukutana has been acquitted of all charges that root back to a shooting incident in Ntungamo. The shootings happened during the NRM primaries last year in Ntungamo district.

Police arrested Rukutana and detained him after he allegedly shot and injured Daniel Rweiburingi. He also allegedly destroyed a motor vehicle in a brawl related to violence during the same period. Later on, he was arraigned in court where he faced charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, as well as threatening violence.

Earlier on today, Rukutana saw himself acquitted from these charges due to the prosecutors failing to provide proof of the former attorney general’s involvement.

‘’From the evidence, it is very clear that at the second scene the victims were attacked by unidentified occupants of a minibus. There is no cogent evidence whatsoever showing that the accused appeared at this scene. In light of the grave inconsistencies and contradictions in the prosecution evidence, this court finds the evidence of the witness a mere fabrication,’’ the act Chief Magistrate Gordon Tumuhimbise ruled.

He further said that according to that the prosecution had miserably failed to prove all the ingredients of the offence of attempted murder against Rukutana.

Therefore, he ruled that the accused should be acquitted for that reason.
