The Best Footballers From Uganda

Ugandans are a people with a deep passion for sport. And of all the sports played and watched in the country, not one comes close to the level of popularity that football enjoys. In fact, football is Uganda’s national sport. Ugandan children start playing and watching the game from a very young age, and continue to enjoy it well into adulthood.

While the Ugandan national football team is not as successful as some other African teams, the country has produced some top notch players. In this article, we are going to go over a few of Uganda’s best footballers, and discuss their career.

Majid Musisi

Of course, we can’t talk about football in Uganda without bringing up Musisi. The name is synonymous with football in Uganda. Majid Musisi was the first football player hailing from Uganda to sign with a European team, that being the French SC Ville. Under Ville, the Ugandan footballer showed the world what he is capable of, not just as a striker, but a proficient goal scorer as well. If he were still alive and active today, there is very little doubt that he would be considered one of the top players at betting sites.

And speaking of betting, Ugandan bettors will be happy to find that some of the top betting sites are now available to them. For example, Sportsbet, now for Uganda, can be accessed through either a PC or a mobile phone. So, if you have any interest in football, and want to check out the World Cup odds, take a look.

David Obua

David Obua, like Musisi, is synonymous with excellence, at least in Uganda. And also like Musisi, Obua made his name outside of his home country. Though the player bounced from club to club in Uganda, it was his time with the EPL team, West Ham United, and the SPL Heart of Midlothian that truly brought him fame. However, Obua never forgot his roots, and today remains the Uganda’s national team all-time top scorer in the Africa Nations Cup, as well as in the World Cup qualifiers.

Obua has won numerous awards and titles, including the Ugandan Cup in 2003, the Mauritian League in 2002, and the Mauritian Cup that same year. With the Scotland’s HoM, he has won the Scottish Cup once, during the 2011-2012 season, and ended up as a runner-up the following year.

Godfrey Walusimbi

While much like the previously mentioned players Walusimbi has played for European and African teams, his true fame comes from his part in the Ugandan national team. So, he is the first footballer on our list to attain fame playing for Uganda. Apart from being an excellent player and left-back in his own right, Walusimbi deserves props, as he is the first and only footballer from Uganda to have played in more than 100 international matches. Quite a feat for the great player.
