Top 15 Weirdest Houses In The World

Everyone has their own style when it comes to the type of houses that they want to live in; some are just weirder than others. Sometimes when picking out the perfect home, we think of the number of bedrooms, the school district, yard space, or how old the house is.[9]

The owners of these homes were looking for a few different options when finding the faultless abode.[2] And some of these owners had their homes made just the way they wanted the house to look, with complete disregard of what others had thought. Hey, to each their own, that’s what I was always taught.

1)   . The Upside – Down House – Niagara Falls, ON, Canada

Niagara Falls is known for its beautiful waterfalls that cascade down from hundreds of feet in the air. Perhaps now it should also be known as the place that has the upside-down house located near the bottom of the falls in Ontario, Canada. The house was built topsy-turvy on purpose and has daily tours for those who want to know what it is like to live inside a place that is not quite as it seems. It’s also across the street from Ripley’s Believe it or Not.[1] Coincidence? No, it really isn’t.

2)   . Airplane House – Lake Whittington, MS, USA

usa
Did you ever wonder what it was like to live inside an airplane? Apparently, that is what Joann Ussery was thinking when she turned her Boeng 727 into the ultimate treehouse in Lake Whittington, Mississippi. In 1994, the hairdresser had lost her home to a tree that had fallen on top of it during an ice storm. She then decided to buy an airplane from a salvage yard thanks to suggestions from her brother. Shortly thereafter, the large aircraft was turned into a home to replace the one she had previously lost.[6]

3) . N55 Walking House – Copenhagen, Denmark

denmark

Do you have a small family who gets tired of living in the same place for too long? Would you like the freedom to live off of the land, yet have that land built directly into your house? Or how about a home that does not need to connect to the “outside” world,[10] and has legs that can take you across the country without even leaving the building? The N55 Walking House is designed to do those things, and you can move it when you get bored of living in the same area day after day. It was built in Copenhagen, Denmark, and can hold up to four people, its one of the complicated houses.[9]

4). Toilet House – Suwon, South Korea

korea
In previous articles, I have mentioned that the people living on the Asian continent seem to have a strange fascination with poop and that they believe that deities live in toilets. This giant toilet house in Suwon, South Korea aids proof to that point. In 2009, Suwon mayor Sim Jae-Duck had this house built (assumingly) in memoriam to his grandmother, since he was born inside her outhouse, according to sources.[5] The late mayor also had a strange affliction with the commode. This humongous building is now a museum, so anyone can walk right through it.

5). Spaceship House – Signal Mountain, TN, USA

TN USA
Driving up Signal Mountain in Tennessee,[3] you might catch a glimpse of a very large spaceship parked atop the mountainside. At first glance, you may think that you’re observing a real-life alien takeover; especially since the bottom of the spaceship has large pillars that are long enough to park a car or two underneath, and a retractable door that appears as if an extra-terrestrial will emerge and abduct an unsuspecting victim.

Quintessentially, it is an actual house that was designed to look exactly like a spacecraft, but it does not fly.[8] You would expect the inside of this house to go along with the outside appearance, and be filled with modern-style space-y furniture; and that is almost exactly the type of décor in this home. The only thing missing would be the control room, but there really is no room for that.

6). Mushroom House – Cincinnati, OH, USA

OH USA

Professor Terry Brown was an architect and taught 35 students at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, who helped in reconstructing his house.[4] Using many different items, they made the house look like a giant mushroom, and that is what the other residents in the neighborhood call his home. The giant mushroom only has one bedroom, but it took 14 years for those involved to complete the project. Unfortunately, Professor Brown died in 2008, but his home is still standing for those who are passing by to enjoy.[2]

7). Bubble House – Cannes, France

CANNES FRA

The 1200 meter bubble house was built in Cannes, France for French designer Pierre Cardin in the 1970s. The bubbles were highly popular during the disco era,[9] but it seems that that is one thing that will never go out of style. The almost 13,000 square feet of modern-style architecture was created mainly for party goers, and it is obvious from the ten contemporary bedrooms, to the oddly-shaped slides that empty directly into the swimming pool in the backyard. There are 28 rooms that are all shaped like giant bubbles, but there isn’t any artwork on the walls (it wouldn’t be possible, since there are so many curves). The house, itself, overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and sits on 2.1 acres of land.[7]

8). The Heliodome – Alsacian, France

FRANCE
France seems to have some pretty unique architecture,[1] since this house is also located among the French people. The Heliodome is also known as the Sundial House, and is located in Alsacian, France. Not only is it called a sundial, it looks and acts just like one, as well. The shape of the Heliodome is lined with an entire wall of windows, and is created so that it interacts with the way the sun hits the side of the building and the different seasons. The sunlight enters the living room that provides heat in the cooler months, and is angled for shade in the summer. It’s a strange-shaped building with a purpose and one of the funniest houses.[9]

9). Cube House – Rotterdam, Netherlands

NETHERLANDS
These cubic-style homes located in the Netherlands look as if someone had rolled enormous dice that just happened to land on top of other homes. The architect Piet Blom,[3] had designed these unusual houses in the 1970s, when (apparently) oddly-shaped houses were “all the rage.” There was a pedestrian bridge that was in the area, and the residents of the town wanted housing to be built upon the bridge, so this architect was asked to help solve the problem. Instead of simply constructing buildings over top of the bridge, he designed a very unique look and style, with pillars and rails made of concrete and wood.[5]

10. House on a Rock – Bajina Basta, Serbia

SERBIA
This adorable little house sits alone atop a giant rock in the middle of a river that runs through Bajina Basta in Serbia.[9] Legend says that the home was built in 1968 by a bunch of visitors who were swimming in that same area, and were looking for a place to rest while swimming. They started out by bringing wood planks to the giant rock, and completed the house one piece at a time. They would bring pieces for the house by boat, kayak or waiting for wood to just float down the river.[2]

11). Haines Shoe House – Hellam, PA, USA

USA PA
We all know how the old nursery rhyme starts, “There was an old woman who lived in a shoe. She had so many children, she didn’t know what to do.” The story doesn’t really say exactly how many kids the old woman had,[1] but the Haines Shoe House in Hellam, Pennsylvania would probably be the size that she would need to raise a small family (if she were to live inside of it).

This giant shoe was created in 1948 by the man who was known as “the Shoe Wizard.” Colonel Mahlon Nathaniel Haines had this 25-foot tall shoe designed for advertising his forty shoe stores that he had in different states; this one just happened to be in Hellam, Pennsylvania. The Colonel made the shoe so people could stay in different rooms at one time; it was basically a hotel for the elderly for a while, its one of the funniest houses.[6]

12). Fallingwater – Pittsburgh, PA, USA

PA USA
Pennsylvania is known for its beautiful mountains and countryside throughout the state,[4] this particular home was built upon a waterfall. This may not be as strange as some of the other houses on the list as far as appearances are concerned, but it is unique in its own way. It is literally built on top of a waterfall. It is simply breathtaking.

The most famous architect in America, Frank Lloyd Wright, created the home for the Kaufmann family in 1936, who were his clients at the time. It is considered a national landmark,[1] and is just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. The house is decorated with modern-style furniture, and has stones aligned around the outside of the building, giving it the perfect look that one would expect out of a waterfall house.

13). Strawberry House – Tokyo, Japan

JAPAN
Japan is the one place in the world that most people think of when they think of giant strawberries, right? Supposedly that’s what the Sanrio company was thinking of when they created this building to resemble a strawberry, right down to the tiny round windows that resemble the seeds.[8] It was built in 1984 and is supposed to be a kid’s shopping mall, it even includes an area for them to play or to hold their birthday party. This building most likely started out as a house, as most of the buildings in the area are residential, there also aren’t any other shopping areas in the vicinity of the colossal berry, its one of the funiest and beautiful houses in the world.

14). The Kettle House – Galveston, TX, USA

USA TX
This building near Galveston, Texas, looks just like a large tea kettle that has been sitting too long.[2] It is made with a steel dome and roof that is made of wood shingles, and has been sitting in the same spot for over 50 years along the Gulf of Mexico. Although it has withstood hurricanes, severe weather and many heavy storms, very little is known about this tea kettle or even from where it was derived. There are rumors that state the original owner had it built and left it to his son, although that is not ever been confirmed, its one of the funny houses in the world.[7]

15). Gold Pyramid House – Wadsworth, IL, USA

usa IL
Nobody really knows the exact reason why the pyramids in Egypt were built, some say that they were designed as an energy source for the ancient times.[3] Jim and Linda Onan were probably a few of these people who had the same way of thinking, so they designed their own golden pyramid in Wadsworth, Illinois. In 1977, the couple built a 17,000 square foot home that is a giant pyramid that has a garage that is also shaped like a pyramid, it even has a moat around it. They give out tours of their house on occasion as well, its one of the complicated houses in the world.[7]
