This year alone during covid pandemic Uganda hospitals lacked blood for various patients.
Uganda Blood Bank Clinical team leader Dr. Samuel Wante says Uganda requires 400,000 units annually however only 300,000 units are collected leaving short fall of 100,000 units.
Wante made the appeal at this years Shumuk Group of Companies blood donation drive to support community in Nakawa division.
Shukla Mukesh Shumuk Group Proprietor and Nakawa West aspiring MP challenged other corporate entities to support health initiatives to keep community in check.
“The number of people who are dire nerd of blood is on increase. Its therefore paramount we all embrace blood donation and challenge corporate companies to mobilize staff to collect more blood to benefit pregnant mothers during birth and those in accidents, “Mukesh said.
Mukesh said blood donation drive is part of the company corporate social responsibility programme to keep community safe and supplement blood Bank efforts to mobilize more blood collections to actualize their operations.
According to Mukesh about 100 units of blood was collected in the one day activity.
Wante however appealed corporate companies and individuals to donate blood to save the situation.
He said this year alone blood Bank faced blood shortage because schools and universities were closed due to covid pandemic lockdown.
“This year alone we faced challenges of blood shortage because most school schools were closed. Schools form. Our major blood donation source,”
Wante warns of serious blood shortage due increased demand by pregnant mothers during covid and election violence.
” We expect demand for blood to rise during Christmas accidents, January from. Pregnant mothers who will be giving birth and during elections because of election violence. Accidents election violence caused covid,”
