A university in eastern Kenya has come out to deny reports that it is enrolling students for a witchcraft degree.
The Machakos University said the reports were malicious and intended to taint the integrity of the university.
They quickly released an official statement on the matter via their Twitter page.

Kenyan news sites and blogs had published articles about the launch of a four-year course in witchcraft at the institution. This came off as very disturbing to many people as they view witchcraft as a backward act associated with ignorance.
However, some people also went as far as tweeting Machakos University asking for more information on this particularly controversial course. They were apparently asking if they could get admission into the institution. Furthermore, some even cracked jokes and asked if the university has a “faculty of satire”.

In 2018, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) gave the University of Zambia US$340,000 to develop a Degree Programme to train students in witchcraft.
Additionally, the training in what they refer to as Intangible Cultural Heritage would commence with the first intake comprising of 20 students.
The Zambia National Commission for UNESCO explained that Intangible Heritage comprises of practices such as Witchcraft, Social Practices such as expression through music, Knowledge, skills as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and rituals.
Zambia National Commission for UNESCO Secretary-General Dr. Charles Ndakala said despite efforts in safeguarding cultural heritage, there are cases of destruction of priceless cultural heritage in certain countries which threatens traditions and customs.
