The congratulatory message came after the Electoral College confirmed that the former vice president won the 270 electoral votes needed to unseat President Trump.
Putin was the only major world leader yet to send his best wishes to the President-elect. He had refused to say anything until the Electoral College had confirmed that the results of the election were authentic.
However, according to the Russian press, Putin sent Biden a telegram on Monday to offer his best wishes to the new president.
A Russian News Agency, Tass, cited a Kremlin press service statement. The statement read, ‘’The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to Joseph Biden. This is on the occasion of the victory in the presidential elections of the United States Of America.’’
In the message, Putin expressed confidence that the two countries, despite their differences will cooperate much better to solve some problems.
In 2016, sources said Russia interfered with the election aiming at undermining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. According to American intelligence officials, Russia did the same in the 2020 elections to ‘denigrate’ Joe Biden.
After Biden’s victory, Trump critics cited Putin’s silence as evidence that the strongman president wanted Trump to win. They also said Moscow was looking for a way to undermine American democracy and spread doubts among voters.
