In one of the reflections shared on his Facebook page, Strive Masiyiwa talked about some people who are not in good terms with him regarding fighting corruption in procurement.
The other day I was presenting the AMSP to a President in West Africa I have known for a long time. He was quite excited about the platform, and asked me to give him access to the prices. Which I did:
A few days later a minister in his government called me, and said:
“My brother you have caused an explosion here!” “Why?” I asked. He laughed and said:
“We have been buying face masks for $25 each and you just gave us dozens of suppliers at $2! We bought diagnostic kits for $50 each, and you have offered us the same from the same suppliers at $12,50!”
Then he added: “People must be very angry with you, right across Africa!”
“I know one powerful politician who had arranged to bring in millions of PPE, and Diagnostic kits from China. He even approached my people trying to sell the stuff at exorbitant prices, until he realized I had just put his corrupt scheme out of business. Of course he is angry and he bad mouths me everywhere. It’s “par for the course” as they say in golf.”
It’s true there are a lot of angry people out there, who had positioned themselves to make money from PPE, and Diagnostic kits, whilst their fellow citizens die!
The AMSP is “Not For Profit”. I don’t own it.
I told one government minister, “if you find comparable products cheaper anywhere, you must buy there. I’m not doing this to make money for myself, but to help governments access at a lower cost. Please use the savings to buy more medicines and to fix hospitals. Pay your doctors and nurses with the savings!”
The AMSP is now the reference site when governments want to process a local tender. They can just go there to compare prices.
Of course I knew what I was doing! I want to introduce transparency in procurement. I hate corruption.
