“Government should emphasize on vaccinating the teachers and students but the support staff are not mentioned anywhere. We feel non teaching school staff should also be vaccinated so that all education sector is safe,” she said.
The country is facing a second wave of COVID-19 however its impact has been most devastating on the education sector.
One of the measures to control the spread of the COVID-19 in Uganda was the closure of all educational institutions for 42 days from 7th June 2021.
The Education of over 15 million Ugandan learners and the support staff has already been disrupted for over a year since March 2020.
Rwabasheija called on government to think of how to bail the private schools choked in debts.
She says once private schools are closed due to debts, the future of thousands of students is unclear.
However, recently, the minister for Finance and Economic Development, Matia Kasaija advised private school owners to sell school assets and repay bank loans instead of asking for government bailouts.
Kasaija was responding to calls by private school owners, who asked government for a school recovery fund to help them finance loan repayments.
