EACOP Public Debate Featuring Bobi Wine, Besigye Blocked By Police

A public debate scheduled for today, Tuesday 24th-2023 that had been organized to discuss the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project has been blocked by the police.

The debate at Emerald Hotel in Wandegeya is organized by the African initiative on food security and environment (AIFE-Uganda). This is a not-for-profit organization whose role is to organize communities and make them proactive against climate change.

Among the key members or panelists are outspoken opposition leaders Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Dr Kizza Besigye. The organization invited the two to the EACOP public debate as main speakers.

However, the organizers had earlier accused police of intimidating their members, insisting that they organized the meeting lawfully.

“We condemn the police for intimidating our organizers. The meeting is within the laws of Uganda. We have the freedom to have our opinion. Come attend the conference and make your voice hard,’’ AIFE-Uganda said in a statement.

The debate also coincides with another event in Bulisa, western Uganda today. This is where President Museveni will launch the oil drilling activities at the Kingfisher oil field.
Dr. Kiiza Besigye upon being stopped said that Muhoozi, President Museveni’S son, has been traversing the country for days but police haven’t lifted a finger at him.
He also asked why the police are hell-bent on stopping an indoor activity. This is yet there is a person moving around disrupting business in Eastern Uganda.
