Man Buried Alive After Sand Mining Pit Collapsed On Him

On Friday afternoon, a man who is believed to be in mid 30s passed away after a sand harvesting pit collapsed on him in Matungulu Constituency in Machakos County, Kenya.

The man whose names were not identified on spot was one of the 5 men who were extracting sand in Katrine area before the incident took place.

The area assistant chief Mr Musau Timothy confirmed the incident and told media on a phone call that he died instantly as his workmates tried their level best to save his life.

They were 5 men who were busy extracting sand before part of the sand pit collapsed, and trapped one of them inside. His friends tried to save him in vain,’said Mr Timothy.

It’s a risky job indeed. The sand miners always dig deeper pits until it becomes dark forcing them to use torches. He was unable to fight for his life,’he added.

Mr Musau warned the locals against unsecured sand mining pits which could probably claim their precious life.

The area police extracted the body and took it to the hospital mortuary.
