Cameras and other media channels were barred from accessing Luzira premises to get wind of the situation. His lawyer, the lord mayor Erias Lukwago however provided an update.
Lukwago said that it’s true Ssewanyana is very sick and in a sad state. He can’t stand on his own and they had to carry him to the hospital from the car.
Lukwago added that Allan Ssewanyana also complains of chest pain around the heart. His legs and arms are also all swollen.
According to Lukwago, they are trying to appeal to the authorities to let them take him to Mulago hospital. This is because these prison hospitals have neither a CT scan or MRI and this is what exactly needs to be done.
Lukwago also said that they were awaiting results from the samples taken by the prison doctors.
“Yes it’s true the Honorable is in a very sad condition. He couldn’t stand on his own by the time they brought him here. His legs and arms are all swollen. He also complains of chest pain around the heart and we want to take him to Mulago hospital for a scan because the prison hospitals have neither a CT or MRI scan. We are however still trying to negotiate with the prison authorities,” said Lukwago.
The Commissioner of Prisons Frank Baine however said there is nothing worrying about Ssewanyana.
He said it’s only the chest pains but the other reports are not true. Baine said that once the results are back, he will be taken back to Kigo prison.
According to sources, Ssewanyana started feeling unwell last Friday. The doctors at Kigo thought that maybe it was ulcers and treated that. However, when the situation worsened, he was referred to Luzira inmates hospital.
Hon Ssewanyana has been in Prison alongside Kawempe north MP Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya since September 2021. The duo are accused of masterminding the spate of killings in the Masaka subregion in 2021.
