Why Museveni Launched National Day Of Physical Activity In The Country

The Ugandan president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Sunday unveiled the National day of Physical exercise in an initiative to battle Non Communicable Disease (NCDs) which is reportedly on an increase and already causing 40% deaths in our motherland, Uganda.

Yoweri Museveni who was among those who participated in a 10.5 km walk, launched the National Day of Physical Activity at Kololo Airstrip grounds to recognize  the importance of physical activity, to gain fitness and staying healthy.

The National Physical Activity day was held under the subject,’’BE PHYSICALY ACTIVE, be healthy and fit, targeting to fight non communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease ( stroke, heart failure /cardiomyopathy, hypertension), diabetes, cancers, that causes untimely deaths.

Diseases like small pox, polio and measles are no longer killing people in our country. Ugandan people are dying of Non Communicable Diseases which are caused by eating too much food and doing very little or no exercise, ‘said president Museveni.

The launch of this campaign included free screening for Non communicable diseases, hepatitis B vaccination, Yellow fever, dancing, Cycling and Aerobics, Jogging, Running and so on, according to the reports from Nile Post.

The health minister, Ruth Aceng said it’s better to increase your physical activity in combination with eating healthy which includes more vegetables and fruits, reduce the consumption of sugars and salts, reduce alcohol consumption and stop tobacco smoking.

7.8% of adults between the age of 50 and 69 have proved to be more physically inactive compared to the youth group aged between 18 to 29 at 4.1% and 30 to 49 at 3.2%.
