Namboole Stadium Plans Hybrid Grass Upgrade To Host Back-To-Back Games

According to Namboole Stadium renovation project manager, Peter Kidemuka, the playing surface will be upgraded. This is from natural grass into a hybrid version to allow more action on the facility. “With plans of making the Namboole stadium playing surface more agile, strong, firm, and very durable, it will withstand more action with minimal care compared to the natural grass currently at the facility,” Kidemuka noted.

What is a hybrid grass system?

A hybrid grass system consists of artificial grass woven together with a smooth and firm backing. This can immediately be laid on top of the desired surface without too much groundwork.

The hybrid system is filled with a planting bed suited for the root system of the grass, into which the grass seed is then planted. Groundsmen patch up the worn-out area in preparation for a game

Kidemuka highlighted that upon sourcing funds from finance, they will embark on weaving the hybrid grass into the natural one to allow for more playing time.

Upon receiving the funds, a stitcher (a machine designed to weave/stitch artificial grass into natural grass) will be ordered. This is to ensure the grass is firm. Over 1.8 billion stitches will be woven into the natural grass.

This is to make the facility capable of hosting two back-to-back games each day. Especially during both the CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 tournaments.

He also noted that the same format will be applied to the Kyambogo University training facility, the Makerere University facility, and the Namboole training facility. These are the training venues for the Namboole Stadium in the 2027 AFCON tournament.

What is the stitching process going to be like?

According to Namboole Stadium managing director, Jamir Ssewanyana, the stitcher will move vertically and horizontally. This is across the pitch to pin in the strands on which the natural grass roots will grow.

This will make the surface firm and eradicate scenes of grass getting pulled up or sand being displaced during matches.

The stitching process can take up to three weeks and is only awaiting the provision of funds from the government and the local organizing committee for CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027.
