Nowip To Train Women Politicians In Uganda

In a bid to inspire women to fill some political spaces in competitive politics, Network for Women in Politics (Nowip), a Non-Governmental  Organisation is set to roll out a capacity building program for women in politics.

Lillian Babirye, the Executive Director says the program will run for the next five years. This is to allow women to have a critical mass of women politicians in the 2026 elections.

“We have a strategic plan to train women to participate in elective politics in the next five years. We realized that most of them lack leadership skills and use of modern media space to compete favorably with men in direct politics yet they would contribute much into tackling women issues in parliament and council level,” Babirye said.

Accordingly, the Democratic Governance Facility will fund the five-year training program.

“As women in politics start our five-year term, we should be ready to use the new media and balance it with the traditional media. Our call to action is that media representatives use women in politics as panelists to reduce male domination. Women too can express themselves, “Babirye added.

Nowip has also embarked on working with the media to claim space for women in politics. It’s also aiding dialogue on political communication to gain and retain women’s political power. This is mostly to persuade the masses to vote and support women during elections.

What Nowip is;

“As we strive towards promoting e-democracy and e-advocacy, the positive belief in the Internet’s potential to bring about major changes and transactions in democracy. Nowip as a new entrant in coordinating the politics of women in Uganda, we believe in new media to play a critical role in information dissemination and public participation as they allow many voices to emerge thus reflecting the diversity of ideas, “Babirye explained.
