The Remembering Of The Uganda Martyrs

129 years ago it was a mournful moment in the Buganda kingdom because the Uganda Martyrs were killed for their faith in the religions brought in by the Christian missionaries with in the kingdom of Buganda.

The killing of these believers was done under the command of  kabaka Mwanga II who was the king of the kingdom by that time and he thought that by believing in the foreigner’s religion was betraying the obligations of the kingdom and their punishment was to die because they were seen as treasonous.

22 Anglican’s and 23 Catholics were killed between November 1885 and January 1886 and the leader of the killing was known as Mukajanga.

Uganda martyrs were really heros!

After killing of the Uganda Martyrs he washed his killing tools at a small well in Namugongo.

The well is found at the Anglican shrine and the water from it is used as blessing water by the Anglican pilgrims because it is believed that the blood of the killed Uganda Martyrs still flows within the water.

One of the amazing things is that among the burnt alive martyrs was the young martyr ever St Kizito who was burnt at the age of 14 years . Since 1976 millions of people from across the world come at Namugongo to carry out a pilgrimage in Uganda and 3rd June was made a public holiday in the country.

People trek from different districts and countries because of the faith they have within their religions and this year’s pilgrimage is headed by the Lira Diocese and the guest of honour is his H.E YOWERI Kaguta Museveni the president of the republic of Uganda.
