Sepp Blatter steps down as FIFA president

The head of the world soccer’s governing body – FIFA , Sepp Blatter said on Tuesday that he will be resigning from his post,  following last week’s  U.S. criminal charges against over 12 of former FIFA officials and sports executives.

On Friday, Blatter was re-elected fifth term  by FIFA’s 209 national associations,while in the news conference, he said that his re-election was not supported by the majority and that he would renounce his post after a remarkable congress of the organization.

The Swiss law-enforcement arrested several soccer officials from Zürich hotel preparing to attend FIFA’s annual meeting. The arrests were connected to a U.S accusation of over a dozen FIFA executives and other officials who they accused of involving in alleged corruption over twenty years.

After his re-election, Sepp Blatter promised to lead a rebirth of FIFA, ruined by the recent  embarrassment and by years of accusations of corruption and abuse of power.

On Tuesday, after announcing his resignation, Blatter said,” what counts to me is the institution, I have done this in order to prevent wars in FIFA, therefore am ready to be replaced.”

Sepp Blatter has served as head of FIFA since 1998!

following a number of scandals and disagreements which involves the assigning of the disputable 2022 World Cup to Qatar, a country with very high temperature and minimal soccer experience.
