Some Of These Popular Shampoo Brands Contain Illegal Cancer Causing Chemicals

What’s the worst thing you can think of that could happen with shampoo?[9] Suffering an eye burn? Swallowing some by accident? Shampoo is simply a liquid preparation containing soap or detergent for washing the hair.[4]

Think again.

According to a study carried out by The Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, California,[2] your shampoo could actually be detrimental to your health.

The study found that at least 100 popular shampoo brands contained a carcinogen known as cocamide diethanolamine,[6] also known as cocamide DEA.

shampooThe issue uncovered by The Center for Environmental Health is so widespread that it’s led to four major hair detergent manufacturers being served California lawsuits.

Cocamide DEA is what makes your detergent foamy, [10]and the problem with it is that it’s a carcinogen. The state of California’s Proposition 65 requires manufacturers to warn consumers about the risks associated with certain substances like cocamide DEA.[7]

Last year, the state even went as far as to ban it after a study found that it causes cancer in laboratory animals.

And it’s only not obscure, cheaply made hair detergent that contain cocamide DEA;[4] well-known companies like Colgate use the substance in their products.[8] And the FDA has done little, even though cocamide DEA is banned in commercial “health” products.

How To Tell If Your Shampoo Has Cocamide DEA

Here’s a list of a few shampoo products that contain cocamide DEA:

  • Prell Classic Clean Sham poo
  • MG217 Medicated Conditioning Sham poo
  • American Crew Classic Daily Sham poo
  • Organics by Africa’s Best Olive Oil Sham poo
  • Palmolive Caprice (Anti-Ceramidas Sham poo)
  • Straight Arrow Mane ‘n Tail Sham poo
  • Ouidad Climate Control Defrizzing Sham poo
  • Carol’s Daughter RUI (Moisturizing Sulfate-Free Shampoo)
  • Rusk Brilliance-Shampoo
  • Vanart Classic Herbal Essence Shampoo

Now, not all products containing cocamide DEA will have the substance’s name written out the same way.[9] Look out for these names on the ingredients label of your hair detergent:[3]

  • Amides
  • Coco
  • N,N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl)
  • Coconut diethanolamide
  • Coconut fatty acid diethanol-amide
  • Cocoyl deithanolamide
  • Ciethanolamide coconut fatty acid condensate

The one thing most of those names have in common is that they sound dangerous. I’m not even entirely sure how to pronounce most of them.[6]

So What Should You Use Instead?

Here’s a shampoo you can make with simple ingredients you can actually pronounce,[12] ingredients that are natural and healthy for you.
