Single-Sex Schools In Uganda Should Be Banned – Says Teacher

A teacher who goes by the names Aunt Pennie on Twitter, has shared her opinion about single-sex schools in Uganda. According to her, these type of schools should be banned from the Country.

Aunt Pennie says that she studied in a single-sex school for the entire 6 years of her secondary education.

She added that she’s proceeded to teach in these schools and also mixed and integrated schools.

Therefore from her experience, she thinks these single-sex schools should be done away with. Aunt Pennie cited indiscipline as one of the major reasons for her opinion.

“I went to a single girls’ school for my 6 years of High School. I have taught in a single boys school and several mixed/integrated schools and as a parent, I think SINGLE SCHOOLS should be ABOLISHED.
Indiscipline in single schools is way too much compared to the cases in integrated schools,” she tweeted.

A couple of her followers tried to defend single-sex schools. However, the majority of the comments agreed with her opinion. These pointed out cases of sodomy, bullying, violence as some of the demerits of these schools.

“The single-sex schools (especially the “traditional” ones) should be tougher on discipline. Unfortunately, they are hostage to their OBs and OGs who believe that religious fanaticism, bullying, alcoholism and drug abuse are a rite of passage, especially for adolescents,” someone pointed out.

“Throughout my entire secondary study, I was in mixed schools. Our headteacher advocated for mixed schools seriously enlightening how it is disadvantage to boys and girls in single schools since they lack social interpersonal relationships with both sexes, confidence & characters” said another.

This comes after a letter that was seemingly released by Kings College Buddo. This is after a case of sodomy by a teacher was reported at the school some time ago by a parent.

The school conceded that it indeed happened and it was taking the necessary precautions.
