Uganda hotels are nursing serious loses due to panic over corona virus disease. Uganda registered her first corona virus case on Saturday however Hotel occupancy in major 5-star hotels in Kampala has reduced from 95% to 5% according to Uganda hotel owner’s association executive Director Jeane Byamugisha.
Byamugisha says this has forced owners to cut salary of workers and forced some hotel staff on leave as they struggle to keep in business.
“it’s the first worst situation we witnessing in the hotel and tourism sector. We currently need finance to extend our loan repayment terms because we do not have business to service the loan,”she said.
From Uganda hotel owners association there over 560 members who drive the hotel business.
Major hit points in hotel business are conferences and accommodation services including the proposed G77 conference that has been cancelled.
According to Byamugisha, Uganda hotels like Metropole, golf course and fairway have closed business while 5-star hotels like Serena hotel and Sheraton hotel staff salary been cut by 50% for the next three months as management waits to come out the tragedy of corona virus.
Corona virus was declared by the people’s republic of china on 31st December however this has spread to all continents and 51 countries. In Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda and Nigeria have already reported cases including Uganda.
