Reports show that a decision to finally lift the ban on Facebook happened yesterday at the top level. They will make official communication on the latest development later on.
In the earlier days of 2021, the Ugandan government banned Facebook and Twitter prior to the general elections.
The ban came as a reiteration of the platforms’ decision to de-register some of the accounts belonging to NRM members.
The government lifted the ban on Twitter a couple of months afterward but that on Facebook stood.
Previously, Ugandan Facebook users have only been able to access Facebook with the help of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Users can now access the platform without the aid of VPNs.
President Yoweri Museveni blocked Facebook from operating in the country, just days after the social media company removed fake accounts linked to his government ahead of a hotly contested general election in January 2021.
In a televised address, Museveni accused Facebook of “arrogance”. He further said he instructed his government to close the platform, along with other social media outlets. However, he only named Facebook.
“That social channel you are talking about, if it is going to operate in Uganda, it should be used equitably by everybody who has to use it,” Mr. Museveni said. “We cannot tolerate this arrogance of anybody coming to decide for us who is good and who is bad,” he added.
