What Next For NUP After Latif Stepping Down From Mayoral Race?

The National Unity Platform Party had settled for Latif Ssebagala as their flag bearer for the Kampala Lord Mayoral race. Yesterday, however, he came out and resigned from the race.

He said he decided so for the good of the party. He assured the public that this was a personal decision and no one was behind it. This decision, he claimed was for the sake of peace in NUP.

NUP leadership has not yet come out to state their next move after this. It should be noted that the party has just nominated Latif a few days back. Obviously it had come with a lot of backlash from the party members and also the public. This was so because some people were supporting Joseph Mayanja alias Chameleon for the mayoral race.

We can’t anticipate right now what the party’s next move will be given that Chameleon declared his intention to come as an independent. Definitely we can’t rule out the fact that its still possible for Chameleon to be taken back but would it be wise?

This ongoing atmosphere in the party can not be good in the public eye. It creates a picture of disorganization within the party and this means losing credit from the voters.

The party is already going through a legal battle that wants to claim the name of the party. As if that is not enough, some members who failed in primaries now want to run as independents.

More than anything, NUP must find means of striking a balance between issues. Otherwise, they are building to later demolish if things continue this way.
